April 24, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu on Friday swore in Dr Muttaqha Darma as Minister of Housing and Urban Development, charging him to confront Nigeria’s massive housing deficit and accelerate reforms aimed at expanding access to affordable homes.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, came a day after the Senate confirmed Darma, during which he highlighted that over 100 million Nigerians lack adequate housing and pledged to work closely with lawmakers to address the crisis.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Tinubu underscored the urgency of the assignment, describing the moment as critical for national development.
“You have a very rich and interesting background. As a leader, we need competent hands like yours. There is no doubt that you have rendered valuable services in all the assignments you have embarked upon; you are a fitting peg in the right position,” the President said.
Tinubu further urged the new minister to remain adaptable and committed to national service, adding, “You must be ready to serve in any capacity in which you are called upon.”
At his Senate screening, Darma directly addressed the scale of the housing challenge, stating that “over 100 million Nigerians lack adequate housing,” and assured lawmakers of his readiness to collaborate with the National Assembly to drive sustainable solutions.
He also pledged to prioritise “improving leadership in the sector, expanding access to affordable housing, and strengthening relevant institutions,” signalling a reform-focused agenda for the ministry.
Darma’s appointment follows a minor Federal Executive Council reshuffle that led to the exit of his predecessor, Ahmed Dangiwa.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, explained that the changes were intended to enhance governance coordination and improve economic delivery.
The outgoing minister formally handed over on Thursday in compliance with directives from the SGF’s office, ensuring a smooth transition.
A seasoned administrator and development expert, Darma holds a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Liverpool and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Atlantic International University, USA.
He also earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering from Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Benin, respectively.
He previously served as Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) from 2008 to 2012 and held key roles in Katsina State, including Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, and Commissioner for Rural and Social Development.
Darma has also contributed to academia as a lecturer at Bayero University, Kano, and is widely published in governance and development studies. Prior to his appointment, he was President of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Human Development Centre in Katsina.
