October 11, (THEWILL) – The seventh FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals get underway in India on Tuesday, and the U17 ladies from Nigeria, the Flamingos, are matched up against Germany, one of the toughest opponents in the competition.
The second Group B match will be played at the Pandit Jawaharlal Stadium in Goa at 4 PM local time while the competition’s official opening match will be played between hosts India and the United States at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Prior to that, at 12.30 pm, Nigeria’s other group B opponents, Chile and New Zealand, will square off in Goa, and group A rivals Morocco and Brazil will do battle in Bhubaneswar.
The global coronavirus pandemic prevented the biennial contest from taking place in 2020. Germany won the majority of the individual awards at the most recent competition, which was held in Uruguay in 2018. Clàudia Pina won player of the competition, Catalina Coll won the best goalkeeper, while Pina and Mukarama Abdulai of Ghana shared the top scorer honour.
Head Coach, Bankole Olowookere, assured on Monday, that his girls know what they are up against, especially Tuesday’s tie against Germany: “Our focus is on getting the three points at stake, which will boost our confidence for the remaining games of the group phase and going forward in the competition.”
