January 30, (THEWILL) – Global football transfer spending reached an all-time high of $9.63 billion (€8.88 billion) in 2023, according to a report published by FIFA on Tuesday. This figure shattered the previous record of $7.35 billion set in 2019 by over $2 billion, representing a 48.1% increase compared to 2022.
The top 10 most expensive transfers last year, including Jude Bellingham’s switch to Real Madrid and Enzo Fernandez’s move to Chelsea, accounted for more than 10% of total expenditure. English clubs topped the list of biggest spenders at $2.96 billion – three times more than French clubs in second place. Saudi Arabian sides broke into the top five for the first time, splashing $970 million on players like Neymar, Sadio Mané and Riyad Mahrez.
Chelsea led the way in terms of individual clubs, followed by Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. In contrast, German teams brought in the most transfer revenue at almost $1.21 billion, aided hugely by the sales of Bellingham and Randal Kolo Muani.
On the global stage, Portuguese clubs imported the most players from overseas with 1,017 transfers, while Brazil exported the highest number at 1,217. The accelerated rise of women’s football was also evidenced by record international transfer numbers in 2023.
Over 1,888 female players switched countries, up from 1,571 in 2022, involving 623 women’s clubs in transfer activity.
