February 06, (THEWILL) – A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, leaving destruction in its wake. Christian Atsu, an ex-English Premier League forward, is among the people reportedly trapped under the rubble.
Although several players from Hatayspor have been rescued, Atsu and the club’s sporting director, Taner Savut, are still missing. A search and rescue operation is underway.
Atsu had a successful career in England playing for top clubs like Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United. He signed with Hatayspor in 2022 and has been playing for the Turkish outfit since. His former club, Newcastle United, expressed their concern in a tweet that read: “Praying for some positive news, Christian Atsu.”
The death toll from the earthquake is rapidly rising, with over 1,200 fatalities reported. A second earthquake, with its epicentre near Kahramanmaras, hit the region several hours after the first, further exacerbating the situation.
