BEVERLY HILLS, March 23, (THEWILL) – Formula One racing driver for the Team Williams, the 23-year-old George Russell, has been nominated to replace Romain Grosjean as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), which is the trade union of Formula One drivers, initially founded on 11th May 1961, with the aim of improving safety standards.
The Chairman of the GDPA is Alexander Wurz while, until Russell’s nomination, Romain Grosjean and Sebastian Vettel served as directors.
Russell was pleased to have been given the role and said: “It is an honour and privilege to be nominated director of the GPDA. I appreciate the support of my fellow drivers in entrusting this role to me and recognise the responsibility it entails.
“In its six decades of existence, the GPDA has been an integral part of supporting and shaping F1 safety, for the sport and our fans. I am looking forward to tackling the new challenges and opportunities alongside Anastasia, Sebastian and Alex.”
Grosjean, a former Haas racing driver, had been a GPDA member for a number of years but was forced to step down as a director following his departure from F1 at the end of last season as he attempted forging a new IndyCar motorsport career.
However, the Frenchman will continue to provide support in the capacity of an advisor. This is more so as significant work continues in the area of safety following his fireball crash in last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix, which he fortunately walked out of with only minor bruises and burns as reported by THEWILL.
