May 12, (THEWILL) – Jamaican sprint superstar, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, has been forced to withdraw from an upcoming athletics meet in Kenya, due to an injury that has disrupted her international season.

Fraser-Pryce expressed her disappointment in a statement on Friday, on the eve of the event in Nairobi, saying: “I was truly looking forward to kicking off my season at one of the greatest athletic events in East Africa.”

According to Kip Keino Classic director, Barnabas Korir, Fraser-Pryce suffered a knee injury during training at Nairobi’s Kasarani stadium on Thursday. This marks a significant setback for the five-time world 100-metre champion, who had captivated the Kenyan crowd at the Kip Keino Classic last year with a scorching 10.67-second win.

While Fraser-Pryce will not be able to compete, her American competitor Sha’Carri Richardson is expected to participate in the 200 meters on Saturday, marking her first time competing in Kenya after withdrawing from the event last year.

Richardson, who won the 100m at the opening Diamond League meeting of the season in Doha last week, will aim to impress the Kenyan audience with her performance.
