October 16, (THEWILL) – The French Football Federation (FFF) has requested that national team player, Jean-Clair Todibo, explain his behaviour during a minute’s silence before France’s recent Euro 2024 qualifier.
Video footage showed the 23-year-old Nice defender laughing during the tribute honouring victims of the conflict between Hamas and Israel, as well as a teacher killed in an alleged Islamist terror attack in northern France last week. The laughing incident occurred prior to France’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam last Friday.
On Monday, the FFF’s national ethics council sent a letter to Todibo asking him to account for his actions, according to council president Patrick Anton. Todibo is currently part of the French squad for Tuesday’s friendly match versus Scotland in Lille. His inappropriate laughter during the solemn moment has prompted the FFF to seek an explanation amidst the controversy.
Some have called for disciplinary action against Todibo, who has yet to publicly address the situation. The talented young player will have an opportunity to give his perspective to the FFF and French fans eager to understand what prompted his untimely reaction.
Regardless of his reasons, Todibo’s behaviour demonstrated poor judgement and insensitivity. The FFF will now determine if further consequences are warranted as Todibo aims to move past this unfortunate incident and refocus on his international duties.
