May 05, (THEWILL) — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) suffered a fresh setback on Tuesday as three senators formally announced their defection to the newly registered Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) during plenary at the National Assembly.
The lawmakers who effected the change include Victor Umeh, who moved from the ADC to the NDC; Rufai Hanga, who left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the NDC; and Enyinnaya Abaribe, who also exited the ADC shortly after joining the party a few weeks ago.
Their defection letters were formally read on the floor of the Senate by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, in line with parliamentary procedure.
The latest movement comes days after former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso also dumped the ADC for the NDC, citing internal leadership crisis and legal uncertainties within their former party.
The duo, both influential political actors with presidential ambitions, pointed to lingering disputes within the ADC, which have been complicated by a recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria directing rival factions to return to the Federal High Court for resolution.
Since its formal registration, the NDC has witnessed a steady influx of politicians and supporters from different parties, a development analysts link to its growing appeal as a stable alternative platform amid ongoing party realignments.
