January 04, (THEWILL) — Fulham salvaged a point thrillingly after Harrison Reed’s spectacular long-range strike in the 97th minute earned a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Craven Cottage.
The midfielder’s first English Premier League goal in almost three years came just three minutes after Cody Gakpo had appeared to win the match for the visitors.
Harry Wilson gave Fulham the lead in the 17th minute when he latched onto Raul Jimenez’s pass and fired low into the bottom corner, with the goal standing after a VAR check.
Liverpool pressed for an equaliser after the interval, with Alexis Mac Allister hitting the crossbar before Florian Wirtz converted Conor Bradley’s pass in the 57th minute following another VAR review.
The hosts nearly regained the lead when Wilson struck the top of the bar with a chip.
Liverpool thought they had claimed victory when Gakpo turned in Jeremie Frimpong’s cross in the 94th minute to take the score to 2-1 in their favour.
Reed had other ideas, however, driving forward before unleashing a 30-yard shot that flew into the top corner.
The goal capped an absorbing contest that saw four goals and two VAR interventions across an action-packed 97 minutes.
Both sides will reflect on missed opportunities to claim all three points, but Fulham will take particular satisfaction from their refusal to accept defeat in the dying moments.
