November 07, (THEWILL) – Borussia Dortmund dealt Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League hopes a potentially fatal blow on Tuesday evening, completing the double over Eddie Howe’s injury-hit side with a 2-0 victory at Signal Iduna Park. First-half striker Niclas Fullkrug and an 11th-minute effort from Julian Brandt secured the three points for Dortmund in front of 81,365 passionate home supporters.
The result gives Dortmund seven points from four games in Group F, three more than Newcastle, who have taken just four from as many matches. Injury-hit Newcastle lacked an attacking spark and now face an uphill battle to progress from the group stage in their first UCL campaign for over a decade. Eddie Howe’s side created openings but failed to take their chances on an ultimately disappointing night.
The result leaves Dortmund well-placed to progress to the knockout stages while Newcastle’s hopes hang by a thread. The two sides will see out their campaign against other sides in the group with Dortmund next up against AC Milan and Newcastle against Group leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
