March 23, (THEWILL) – Tyson Fury has called out Oleksandr Usyk for the collapse of their highly anticipated heavyweight championship fight.
The WBC heavyweight champion accused Usyk of “running” and not being man enough to take him on. As THEWILL reported, negotiations between the two teams had been ongoing for some time but ultimately failed to reach a conclusion, leaving the fight in tatters.
Fury had been scheduled to face unified WBO, WBA and IBF champion Usyk on April 29, but the dispute over the purse split and rematch clause proved too much to overcome. Usyk had accepted Fury’s challenge to take the short end of a 70/30 purse split on the condition that Fury made a significant donation to the Ukrainian relief effort.
However, Fury claimed that Usyk “tried all week to get out of it, begging for a rematch”. The WBA is now expected to instruct Usyk to fight its mandatory challenger, Daniel Dubois, while Fury continues to wait for his next opponent.
Despite the collapse of the fight, Fury remained confident, stating: “Keep running. Fight Dubois at the Copperbox now. And always know you or anybody else like you could never tangle with the ‘Gypsy King’.
