Cody Gakpo

December 07, (THEWILL) – Last summer, with wild rumours about prospective transfers in the news, Cody Gakpo has admitted that he “thought about” joining Manchester United, when it was reported that the Red Devils were interested in him, and he revealed that he will consider them again if they made another approach.

When United’s move for Antony seemed increasingly doubtful, Old Trafford showed interest in the young forward. A move for the Dutchman did not happen because United returned to Ajax and complied with their requests to complete the deal for the Brazilian.

Since then, Gakpo has had a fantastic World Cup campaign in Qatar, which has drawn the attention of big teams, including United again. His performances in the Middle East have further strengthened United’s belief in his abilities, and Erik ten Hag is pressing for his signing.

Of the renewed interest, Gakpo said: “I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. If they come, I will think about it with God’s help. I thought about Man Utd last summer, but when that didn’t happen, I didn’t know anymore. Then Leeds arrived, I had doubts…now I wait and see.”

After United withdrew, a transfer to the Premier League still seemed possible, with Leeds and Southampton expressing interest. However, Gakpo decided to remain at PSV Eindhoven. Gakpo presently has three goals from four games in Qatar, and he will have the opportunity to add to that total on December 9, when he faces Argentina in the quarter-finals.
