August 20, (THEWILL) – American teenager, Coco Gauff, earned her first career victory over world number one, Iga Swiatek, on Saturday, defeating the Polish star 7-6(2) 3-6 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
After losing seven straight matches to Swiatek, the 19-year-old Gauff snapped the streak in a thrilling three-set battle, lasting nearly three hours. Gauff withstood Swiatek’s powerful groundstrokes and aggressive returning, saving four match points before closing out the victory. She became the first teenager to reach the Cincinnati final since 2004.
The semi-final was tightly contested throughout, with neither player able to gain control. After splitting the first two sets, Gauff secured a critical break in the decider to take a 4-3 lead. She served out the match in the final game as Swiatek sailed a forehand volley wide on championship point.
Gauff has now recorded 11 career wins against top 10 opponents. Just last week she defeated Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in Montreal. After struggling against Swiatek in previous meetings, Gauff played with determination and confidence on Saturday. “I was just saying, ‘I’m Coco Gauff and I can do it,'” she said after the match.
With her stellar results over the past month, the rising American star will enter the US Open later this month with plenty of momentum. Saturday’s win demonstrates that Gauff has the mental toughness and skill to compete with the best in the world. She will seek her first WTA 1000 title on Sunday in the championship match, where she will face either second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka or Karolina Muchova.
