January 21, (THEWILL) – American tennis sensation, Coco Gauff, continued her impressive run at the 2024 Australian Open by defeating Magdalena Frech of Poland in straight sets to reach her first quarter-final in Melbourne. The 19-year-old cruised past the unseeded Pole 6-1 6-2 in just over an hour on Sunday.
Gauff, the fourth seed and reigning US Open champion, was in total control from the outset, breaking Frech’s serve in the opening game. She barely gave her opponent a chance as she dominated from the baseline and regularly approached the net to finish points. The first set lasted only 31 minutes as Gauff overpowered her rival.
The world number four faced slightly more resistance in the second set but ultimately had too much firepower for her opponent. Gauff broke for a 3-1 lead and never looked back as she continued her bid for a second Grand Slam title. She is yet to drop a set so far this tournament.
“I’d love for every match to go pretty easy,” said Gauff after the win. “Going into this, I’ve always had the goal of trying to close [early rounds] in straight sets and not putting too much stress on the mind and the body.”
In the quarter-finals, the teenage prodigy will play Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. Gauff, who won the Auckland title in the lead up to the Australian Open, has now won nine straight matches in 2024 and looks poised to go very deep at Melbourne Park.
