September 24, (THEWILL) — Barcelona midfielder, Gavi, will remain sidelined for four to five months following knee surgery, the club announced on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Spain international underwent an operation on his meniscus in the same knee that previously suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The young midfielder has not appeared for Barcelona since August, having only returned last season from his ACL problem. His latest setback means he will miss a significant portion of the current campaign and likely remain unavailable well into the new year.
Barcelona had initially hoped Gavi would return to action this season’s campaign, but the surgery has extended his rehabilitation period considerably. The timing proves particularly challenging for manager Hansi Flick, whose team continues their La Liga campaign on Thursday against Real Oviedo.
The Catalan club faces additional midfield concerns with Fermin Lopez expected to miss approximately three weeks due to a muscle injury. Lopez sustained the problem during Sunday’s victory over Getafe, further reducing Flick’s options in the centre of the park.
Both injuries are significant losses for Barcelona, with Gavi’s extended absence particularly concerning, given his previous lengthy spell on the sidelines. The club must now manage without two key midfield players during this initial period of the season.
