November 19, (THEWILL) – Genoa have officially announced the dismissal of head coach Alberto Gilardino on Tuesday, following a challenging season in Serie A.
The club confirmed the coaching change through their official social media channels, reflecting growing concerns about the team’s performance in the 2024/2025 campaign.
Currently positioned in 17th place, Genoa sits precariously close to the relegation zone, having earned only two victories from 12 matches this season.
Gilardino, who took over the coaching responsibilities in December 2022 after managing the club’s Under-19 team, previously guided the side to an 11th-place finish in the previous season.
The 42-year-old former professional footballer, renowned for his World Cup victory in 2006 and UEFA Champions League title with AC Milan, had a significant playing career that included over 500 Serie A appearances.
During his earlier stint as a player at Genoa between 2012-2014, he demonstrated remarkable skill by scoring 21 goals in 52 matches.
Patrick Vieira, the 48-year-old former Arsenal and France midfielder, is the frontrunner to replace Gilardino according to some sources.
Vieira, who most recently managed Crystal Palace in the English Premier League and Strasbourg in Ligue 1, has been without a club since departing Strasbourg in July last year.
The managerial change signals Genoa’s urgent desire to improve their league standing and avoid potential relegation.
