Germany goalkeeper Tim Wiese is a free agent after parting company with Hoffenheim on Wednesday, bringing an end to an unhappy 18-month spell at the Bundesliga club.
The 32-year-old, who won the last of his six caps in a friendly against France almost two years ago, made just 10 league appearances for Hoffenheim after joining them in July 2012 from Werder Bremen.
His last appearance was in January 2013 and he was then dropped from the squad after a knee injury before being fined by the club last February over an incident at a carnival.
Wiese failed to win back his place under coach Markus Gisdol and he has spent the last 12 months training apart from the first team.
His contract was due to run until June 2016 and Hoffenheim are reported to have paid Wiese six million euros (US$8.1m) to terminate the deal.
“I will stay in Rauenberg (near Hoffenheim) because my daughter goes to the school there,” Wiese, who made a reported 3.5 million euros per year, told German daily Bild.
“Whatever comes after that is up in the air, I won’t give it much thought in the next few weeks.
“Things didn’t go well, but I am enough of a sportsman to wish Hoffenheim all the best.
“I hope the team have a good second half of the season and what has gone before, we can now forget about.”
Wiese has a wealth of Bundesliga experience having made 269 German league appearances, the majority of which came during a seven-year spell at Werder Bremen, who have struggled to replace him since he left.
