May 21, (THEWILL) – Olivier Giroud put on a sensational display as AC Milan extended their bid for a spot in the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 5-1 victory over Sampdoria, the bottom side of Serie A.
The French forward showcased his goal-scoring prowess, netting a first-half brace and completing his hat-trick in the second half at San Siro on Saturday. Milan, still recovering from their recent Champions League semifinal loss to rivals Inter, remained on course in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
The Rossoneri wasted no time asserting their dominance, as Rafael Leao opened the scoring just nine minutes into the game, after connecting with Brahim Diaz’s well-placed lob. However, Sampdoria stunned their hosts by equalising through Fabio Quagliarella, who converted Alessandro Zanoli’s cut-back past Milan goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.
However, Giroud swiftly restored Milan’s lead with a header from Diaz’s cross, before converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Leao by Koray Gunter. In the second half, any hopes of a Sampdoria comeback were dashed when Diaz found the back of the net from Sandro Tonali’s square pass in the 63rd minute. Giroud sealed the emphatic victory for Milan just five minutes later, brushing off Bram Nuytinck’s challenge to slam the ball home from close range.
Sampdoria will face Sassuolo in their next fixture on Friday, while Milan will travel to Juventus two days later, in what promises to be a crucial clash in their quest for UCL qualification.
