May 22, (THEWILL) – AC Milan beat Sassuolo 3-0, helped by an Olivier Giroud brace, to end an 11-year wait for a Serie A title.
Milan simply needed a point on the final day of the season at the Mapei Stadium to dethrone city rivals Inter, and they did so in style in a completely one-sided first half. The brilliant Rafael Leao set up Giroud for a double and then laid on the third goal for Franck Kessie.
Stefano Piolo’s side cruised to win in Reggio Emilia on Sunday, to finish the season two points ahead of Inter and reclaim the Scudetto for the first time since the 2010/2011 campaign.
Milan failed to maintain a title campaign last season, but they were not to be denied this time, winning their first trophy since winning the Supercoppa Italiana in 2016. The champions went on a five-game winning streak to prevent Inter from defending their title.
