January 18, (THEWILL) – The Golden State Warriors have announced the tragic passing of assistant coach Dejan Milojevic at the age of 46. Milojevic suffered a fatal heart attack during a team dinner in Salt Lake City on Tuesday. Despite life-saving efforts, he died on Wednesday morning at a local hospital.
Milojevic had been with the Warriors for three seasons, helping the team capture the 2022 NBA championship. Head coach Steve Kerr paid tribute, describing Dejan as “one of the most positive and beautiful human beings I have ever known, someone who brought joy and light to every single day.” The NBA also released statements mourning the loss of a “beloved colleague and dear friend.”
Originally from Belgrade, Serbia, Milojevic enjoyed a successful 14-year playing career in Europe. He was named Adriatic League MVP 3 times from 2004-2006. Milojevic moved into coaching with Mega Basket in Serbia for eight seasons before joining the Warriors. He had previously served as an assistant coach for the Serbian national team.
The Warriors were scheduled to play the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. However, the game has been postponed due to the “medical emergency in the Warriors family”, with a new date to be announced. The Jazz and the rest of the NBA paid their respects to a “well-respected and beloved member of the NBA family.”
His demise means the loss of an incredible talent and warm, joyful human being, as recounted by those with personal experiences of the man. Fans have sent thoughts of consolation to his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched. His passion and energy will be greatly missed.
