May 23, (THEWILL) – Stephen Curry has been declared the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion for the 2022-23 season, according to an announcement made by the NBA on Tuesday.
This prestigious recognition is a testament to Curry’s outstanding contributions in the areas of voter registration, education, and empowering underrepresented communities. His involvement as co-chair of Michelle Obama’s “When We All Vote” initiative and his work with the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition’s “Freedom to Vote” program were key factors in securing this accolade.
In addition to his impactful activism, the Golden State Warriors Guard has demonstrated his commitment to social justice through his various business ventures. His lifestyle brand, Underrated, is dedicated to providing valuable opportunities to underrepresented groups, including access to college recruiters, sports agents, and industry leaders.
Furthermore, his multimedia company, Unanimous Media, has been instrumental in supporting underrepresented filmmakers, creators, and writers across the entertainment industry. Curry’s philanthropic endeavours with his wife Ayesha through their nonprofit organisation, Eat. Learn. Play., has significantly impacted Oakland students by providing meals, books, and funding for teacher-led literacy projects, as well as revitalising play spaces.
Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Curry said, “As an athlete, I consistently leverage my platform to amplify advocacy and address the pervasive issue of systemic racism. I firmly believe that we must be vocal both on social media and in real life, taking tangible actions to effect real change in our society and for generations to come.”
Other noteworthy finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award included Jaren Jackson Jr. of the Memphis Grizzlies, Tre Jones of the San Antonio Spurs, Chris Paul of the Phoenix Suns, and Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics. Each finalist had the opportunity to select a social justice organisation to receive a $25,000 donation from the NBA.
