October 06, (THEWILL) — Pep Guardiola has reached 250 victories in charge of Manchester City. The Spaniard notched this milestone after his side defeated Brentford 1-0 in the English Premier League on Sunday, in what was his 349th match, recording 50 draws and 49 defeats along the way. An early goal from Erling Haaland in the ninth minute proved sufficient for all three points at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The 54-year-old became the fastest manager to reach 250 wins with a single English top-flight club. Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson required 404 matches to reach the same total, whilst Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger needed 423 games. Everton manager, David Moyes, took 645 fixtures to arrive at the milestone. When told of this statistic, Guardiola joked: “I would invite all of them to dinner. I think it is an honour to sit at the same table as them.”
Guardiola acknowledged the significance of his 10-season tenure at City, suggesting his faster rate stemmed from consistent success. “Of course, 250 victories is a lot. Maybe it is faster for one reason – because we won a lot,” he said. The manager added that he was unaware of the record before the match and promised to contact his fellow managers to arrange the proposed dinner.
City have scored more EPL goals in 2025 than any other team, with 55 to their name. The club also shares the joint-most wins in the competition this calendar year with Liverpool, both having secured 16 victories. Despite dominating the first half against Brentford, Guardiola’s side failed to extend their lead, creating a tense finish.
The City boss praised his team’s opening 45 minutes but admitted the narrow margin made the second half difficult. “We had an outstanding first half – we were close to our best in many things. The problem is when you have chances and do not score goals, and the goalkeeper made good saves, so a 1-0 is very difficult in the second half,” Guardiola explained. He confirmed the side had improved considerably since their match against Manchester United and noted they had corrected last season’s failure to win at the same venue.
