February 10, (THEWILL) – Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has voiced his frustration with the nine English Premier League clubs who voted to expel the team from the UEFA Champions League due to Financial Fair Play breaches.
Speaking ahead of City’s match against Aston Villa, Guardiola named Tottenham Hotspur chairman, Daniel Levy, as one of the key players behind the charges brought against his team.
As THEWILL reported, City is facing over 100 breaches of EPL regulations and the possible consequences range from points deductions to expulsion. However, Guardiola remains defiant and stated that the charges are a result of the EPL wanting to further their own European ambitions.
He stated: “Yeah of course. It’s the Premier League…You should go to the chairman, the CEOs, Daniel Levy, and ask them.” He also referred back to the two-year ban imposed by UEFA in 2020, which was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He argued that the nine Premier League sides were in favour of the ban as it would give them a better chance of reaching the Champions League.
Guardiola stated, “Nine teams: Burnley, Wolves, Leicester, Newcastle, Spurs, Arsenal, [Manchester] United, Liverpool, Chelsea [wanted] us out of the Champions League, because they want that position. To take that position that we won on the pitch.”
