January 19, (THEWILL) — Crystal Palace captain, Marc Guehi, has completed his transfer to Manchester City in a major January signing for the English Premier League outfit. The 25-year-old England defender was previously close to joining Liverpool during the summer transfer window before negotiations collapsed. City manager, Pep Guardiola, has moved to address a defensive crisis, with both Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias ruled out through long-term injuries whilst Arsenal currently lead the EPL table.
Guehi comes to the Etihad Stadium with significant experience despite his young age. The centre-back progressed through Chelsea’s Academy before spending a successful loan period at Swansea City, then signing permanently for Crystal Palace. During his time with the Eagles, he captained the south London club to FA Cup and Community Shield honours in 2025, establishing himself amongst the League’s top defenders.
The transfer is a considerable setback for Crystal Palace, who announced earlier this week that manager, Oliver Glasner, will depart at the end of the current campaign. Losing their captain mid-season compounds the challenge facing the FA Cup holders. Club director, Hugo Viana, commented: “It is clear Marc has been one of the best defenders in English football for quite some time now, so we are absolutely delighted to bring him to Manchester City. I feel we have signed a huge talent who will help us improve. He is only 25, but he has shown already he is a leader, a brilliant professional and someone desperate to improve.”
Guehi will reunite with England teammates Phil Foden and John Stones at Manchester City. Speaking about Stones, the defender said: “I think John has taken me under his wing, to be honest. Especially when I’m with the national team, I see him as a big brother. He’s such an amazing person to be around and I’m really delighted to play with him.” The international connection should help Guehi integrate quickly into Guardiola’s squad during a critical period of the season.
The new signing addressed supporters in an official statement, saying: “It’s definitely the right environment for me to improve and just get better. Hopefully, I can bring what I have to the table to help every single person here too.” Manchester City will expect Guehi to make an immediate impact, filling the void left by injured defenders and helping the club chase down Arsenal in the title race.
