Guimaraes - Newcastle

December 06, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United returned to winning form in the English Premier League with a 2-1 home victory over Burnley, who finished the match with 10 men. Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon scored for Eddie Howe’s side, while Zian Flemming’s stoppage-time penalty gave the visitors brief hope at St James’ Park.

The opening period saw chances at both ends before Guimaraes gave Newcastle the lead in the 31st minute, beating Martin Dubravka directly from a corner. Burnley’s task became significantly harder in the 43rd minute when Lucas Pires received a red card for tripping Anthony Elanga whilst being the last defender on his first EPL start.

Gordon converted from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time after Lesley Ugochukwu was judged to have handled the ball. The second half passed largely without incident until Jacob Ramsey conceded a penalty for handball in the 94th minute, which Flemming dispatched to reduce the deficit.

Burnley nearly snatched a dramatic equaliser with the final touch of the game, but Josh Laurent could not connect with Marcus Edwards’ cross. The result extended the Clarets’ losing run to six consecutive matches.

Newcastle’s victory lifted them into the top half of the table. Aaron Ramsdale had earlier denied Pires’ corner, whilst Gordon struck the post before the opening goal arrived.
