July 29, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, remains optimistic about the Super Falcons’ chances at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite losing 1-0 to Spain in their second group match, Gusau believes Nigeria can beat Japan in their final group game on Wednesday.
Spain scored late through Alexia Putellas to defeat Nigeria, leaving the Falcons without points after two matches. However, Gusau praised the team’s performance against the world champions, noting they created several chances.
Nigeria now faces a must-win situation against Japan to have any hope of progressing. A victory by three or more goals, combined with a Spain win over Brazil, could see the Falcons advance automatically. Alternatively, they could qualify as one of the best third-placed teams with a strong win.
The Super Falcons currently sit bottom of Group C behind Spain, Brazil and Japan. Spain has already qualified with six points, while Brazil and Japan have three points each. Nigeria will need results to go their way in other groups to have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
Gusau expressed pride in the team’s efforts so far and expects improvement against Japan. He emphasised that playing competitively against the world champions was a positive sign, despite the disappointing result.
