August 09, (THEWILL) – Germany won the Olympic women’s football bronze medal on Friday, defeating Spain 1-0 in a tense match decided by a penalty and a last-minute save.
Giulia Gwinn scored the winning goal from the penalty spot after Spanish goalkeeper, Cata Coll, fouled her in the box. The German winger calmly placed her shot into the bottom-right corner, wrong-footing Coll.
Spain had their chances, hitting the crossbar twice in the first half through Teresa Abelleira and Aitana Bonmati. They were awarded a penalty in the final seconds when Janina Minge fouled Lucia Garcia, but Alexia Putellas’ spot-kick was saved by Ann-Katrin Berger.
The victory marks Germany’s fourth Olympic bronze medal in women’s football, their first since 2008. Spain’s wait for an Olympic medal in the sport continues, as does their winless record against Germany.
Gwinn was the standout performer for Germany, recording the most shots (two) and touches in the opposition box (five) among her teammates. Her decisive penalty proved the difference in a closely contested bronze medal match.
