March 21, (THEWILL) – Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, has criticised the absence of responsibility in motorsport. On Thursday, he voiced his support for Susie Wolff, who has initiated legal proceedings against the FIA, the governing body of motorsport. Hamilton lauded Wolff’s courage and leadership, stating, “In a world where often people are silent, for her to be standing up sends such a great message.”
Wolff, the director of Formula 1’s academy series for aspiring female drivers, revealed on Wednesday that she had filed a criminal complaint in French courts. This action follows a controversial inquiry into her conduct in 2023, which stemmed from allegations of a potential conflict of interest involving her husband, Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Formula 1 team principal. The investigation was swiftly concluded by the FIA after just two days, despite initial concerns raised by other team principals.
Both Formula 1 and Mercedes firmly rejected the accusations and expressed frustration with the FIA’s handling of the matter. Hamilton emphasised the sport’s lack of transparency and accountability, stating, “Things happen behind closed doors, there is no transparency, there really is no accountability.” He hopes Wolff’s stance will bring about meaningful change in a male-dominated industry.
In a social media post at the time the allegations surfaced, Susie Wolff described them as “intimidatory and misogynistic.” On Wednesday, she reiterated her commitment to holding people accountable, saying, “I feel, more than ever, it is important to stand up, call out improper behaviour and make sure people are held to account.”
Hamilton expressed concern about the potential consequences of filing complaints, stating: “We are living in a time where the message is if you file a complaint, you will be fired. And that is a terrible narrative to be projected to the world, especially when we talk about inclusivity.”
