March 15, (THEWILL) – Sir Lewis Hamilton has stated that he is formally going to include the name “Larbalestier”, his mother’s surname, to his own full name.
The 37-year-old Formula One driver, who will start a new season with Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team in Bahrain this weekend, said he was changing his name to honour his mother.
“I am really proud of my family’s name,” he stated. “My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name.
“I don’t really fully understand the whole idea that when people get married the woman loses her name and I really want my mum’s name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
When asked when the change would happen, the seven-time world champion said: “Hopefully soon. We are working on it.”
When Lewis was two years old, his father Anthony and his mother Carmen divorced. Hamilton is preparing for his 16th season, trying to improve on a disputed 2021 drivers’ championship loss to Red Bull rival Max Verstappen.
As THEWILL previously reported, in December, the racing driver was knighted by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle, and he was accompanied by his mother.
