October 16, (THEWILL) – Devin Haney claimed a unanimous decision victory over George Kambosos Jr. to retain his undisputed lightweight title in their rematch on Saturday.
Haney once more displayed his talent, rapidly adjusting tactics before seizing control of the fight and pummeling Kambosos en route to a convincing win. Early on it seemed Kambosos had put together a strategy that would help him avoid the pitfalls from their first encounter.
Kambosos started the fight aggressively to try and dissuade Haney from using his usual jab-heavy strategy like the first time. Kambosos also constantly moved between an orthodox and southpaw stance in an attempt to disrupt Haney’s timing. But, Haney quickly modified his strategy, using clinches to keep Kambosos at a comfortable distance which allowed him to effortlessly throw his trademark jab.
Haney started to unleash with his straight right fists repeatedly snapping back Kambosos’ head and eventually cutting Kambosos across the eye to draw blood. Other than Haney lowering his power shots as he sought a stoppage, not much had changed from the opening rounds.
To his credit, Kambosos managed to withstand the attack without ever appearing to be in danger or need of being stopped via knockout until the last round. The final standings in favour of Haney after 12 rounds of the bout were 119-109, 118-110, and 118-110.
