October 17, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur dampened Newcastle United’s takeover celebrations with a 3-2 victory thanks to Harry Kane’s first Premier League goal of the season.
Newcastle United’s first match since the controversial Saudi Arabia-backed takeover was completed last week had a carnival atmosphere at St James’ Park, but the final result brought their fans back to earth.
The hosts got off to a flying start, scoring after just two minutes when Callum Wilson beat his man to head home a Javi Manquilo cross as the home team’s new owners celebrated.
After good work on the wing by Kane, Tottenham equalised after 17 minutes when Tanguy Ndombele whipped an excellent finish into the top corner of the Newcastle net.
Kane flicked a finish over Karl Darlow that was eventually adjudged onside after being initially disallowed, and the visitors to St James’ Park scored a second to turn the game around just seven minutes later.
As THEWILL previously reported, the match was temporarily halted near the end of the first half due to a medical emergency in the stands, but play quickly resumed and Spurs added a third through Son Heung-min before the break.
After two quick yellow cards, Jonjo Shelvey, who was introduced at the hour mark, was sent off in the 83rd minute. Eric Dier then diverted a free-kick into his own net, giving Newcastle United a late lifeline.
Spurs, however, would take all three points despite the fightback. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side now sits in fifth place on the Premier League table..
In this win for Tottenham, Kane and Son both stood out, but it was Ndombele who made the biggest difference in the middle of the pitch. The French midfielder is in fine form and is doing more than anyone else to help Spurs turn their season around.
For much of the match at St James’ Park, Ndombele was a driving force in the middle and Newcastle United were unable to contain him.
The goals for Spurs brought Harry Kane and Son Heung-min combined total to 35 goals, which is second only to Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s 36 in the English Premier League.
