April 9, (THEWILL) – The French Interior Minister has announced that security will be “considerably reinforced” for the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. This decision follows a “threat” from the Islamic State group, which has allegedly targeted all the quarter-final matches scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, the jihadist group has “clearly threatened” the UCL quarterfinal matches, not just the PSG versus Barcelona clash. Darmanin stated that he had spoken to the police early in the morning and they had significantly increased the security measures in place.
According to reports monitored by THEWILL, the Islamic State has threatened the UCL quarterfinals, not specifically in France, through one of its communication outlets. The matches on Tuesday, will see Arsenal take on Bayern Munich in London while reigning European champions Manchester City host Real Madrid.
The other quarter-final match on Wednesday, will be between Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the Spanish capital. The European football’s governing body, UEFA, has confirmed that all the matches will proceed as scheduled, with appropriate security arrangements in place.
PSG coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the concerns surrounding the terrorist threats, stating that “who is not worried or concerned by terrorist threats?” He expressed his hope that the threats are just that and that nothing will happen, emphasising the need to control the situation.
