June 12, (THEWILL) – Hong Kong is set to welcome international men’s tennis once again after a hiatus of over two decades, as announced by the ATP Tour on Monday.
The outdoor hard-court tournament, scheduled from December 31 to January 7, will act as a prelude to the Australian Open. The forthcoming event in Hong Kong will replace the previous year’s tournament held in Pune, India during the same period, according to the men’s ATP Tour.
This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first ATP Tour event in the city since 2002, featuring legendary players such as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, and Michael Chang. With a total prize pool exceeding $650,000, the tournament will take place just before the 2024 Australian Open, which is slated to commence on January 15.
Expressing his delight, Philip Mok, president of Hong Kong’s tennis association, remarked: “For years, our objective has been to bring an ATP Tour level event back to Hong Kong, and we are overjoyed to finally see it become a reality.”
