June 19, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, Sergio Rico, has emerged from a coma after being involved in a horse riding accident three weeks ago, according to his wife.

As THEWILL reported, the 29-year-old Spaniard fell off a horse during an annual event in Huelva, Spain, resulting in a head injury. He was promptly transported to a hospital in Seville and subsequently placed under sedation. Expressing her optimism about his recovery, Rico’s wife, Alba Silva, stated that he was making gradual progress.

She said: “[He’s] taking small steps forward and the truth is that we already see the light a little more. Little by little, he is recovering, and I knew from the beginning that he was going to get better because he is a champion. We’re going step by step, and we need to be patient.”

Rico, who had been loaned to Fulham for the 2018/2019 season from Liga side Sevilla, later joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan for the 2019/2020 campaign before becoming a permanent member of the team in the following season. During the most recent campaign, he was loaned to Mallorca, playing for PSG 14 times.

In a show of solidarity, PSG players paid tribute to Rico in their final game of the season by donning shirts bearing his name. Kylian Mbappe also commemorated a goal by displaying a shirt adorned with Rico’s name and the number 16.
