Huesca States Readiness To Challenge Nwakali's Claims And Defend Itself

April 07, (THEWILL) – SD Huesca, a second division club in Spain is threatening to file charges against Super Eagles’ midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali, after the player exposed the reasons why the club terminated his contract on Tuesday.

Nwakali’s side of the story held that Huesca had cancelled his contract after he represented Nigeria at the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations allegedly against the Spanish club’s desires, and then turned down a January transfer.

In a message shared on Twitter, the 23-year-old stated he “will no longer suffer in silence”, as he outlined a series of charges against the club.

Nwakali claimed that Huesca Sporting Director, Ruben Garcia, had pressed him not to join the Super Eagles squad for the Nations Cup in January, and that the club had been “abusing its power” to persuade him to sign a new contract, including neglecting to pay his salaries when due.

On Tuesday, the second-tier club announced that Nwakali’s contract, which was set to expire at the end of the season, had been cancelled, but gave no rationale for the decision.

Before departing for international duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Nwakali made his final appearance for the club against Girona on January 2nd. He made three appearances for Nigeria at the Nations Cup in Cameroon, but was forced to sit out their last-16 loss to Tunisia due to illness.

He further claimed that after returning to Huesca on February 1, he was forced to train alone.

But, in a statement released by Huesca, the club said that they “completely deny and disagree with the player’s accusations” and emphasised that they will defend themselves in court if required.

“The club has acted at all times with the utmost respect for the player. Given the seriousness of some of the statements made, the club reserves the exercise of any actions it deems appropriate in defence of its legitimate rights and interests.”

Prior to the termination of his contract, Nwakali, who joined Huesca from Arsenal in September 2019, had made 33 appearances for the club.
