December 06, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers ended their run of conceding goals on Tuesday, defeating struggling Burnley 1-0 at Molineux Stadium. The lone goal came in the 42nd minute from forward Hwang Hee-Chan for his 9th of the campaign.
The first half saw Burnley control possession and create the better chances before Wolves took the lead. Clarets keeper James Trafford denied Wolves’ Pablo Sarabia early on while striker Johann Gudmundsson had efforts for the visitors.
Burnley nearly opened the scoring in the 39th minute but Dan Bentley made a fine save to deny Sander Berge. Hwang’s goal against the run of play proved decisive. He finished off a quick counterattack after Burnley lost possession in their own half.
Despite more Burnley pressure after the break, Wolves defended stoutly to claim their first clean sheet since a 1-0 win over Preston in August. The loss leaves Burnley second from the bottom while Wolves now enjoy a comfortable cushion from the drop zone.
With maximum points, Wolves climb to 12th place, putting them 11 points clear of relegation. Gary O’Neil will be hoping this victory provides a platform to push on up the standings after a turbulent first half of the season.
