June 29, (THEWILL) – Odion Ighalo, returnee Super Eagles striker, can now envision winning a continental football championship, after helping Al Hilal lift an 18th Saudi Arabia Professional League with his brace against Al Faisaly for his first career title after 17 years.
Ighalo won the league for the first time, since moving to Saudi Arabia in February 2021, by scoring two standard poacher goals from close-range in each half to secure a 2-1 victory and send Al Faisaly to relegation. With 24 goals, the most goal tally of his career, the Super Eagles veteran cemented his position at the top of the scoring chart in the Saudi league.
The 33-year-old was in a good mood following the team’s victory and shared some lovely images of their trophy-lifting ceremony with his followers on social media.
Yet, Ighalo’s season is far from over. Al Hilal still has a game in hand as they are billed to contest the AFC Cup against Shabab Dubai. It will be an opportunity for the Nigerian attacker and he will have a shot at reaching his dreams of capturing his first continental trophy.
As THEWILL previously reported Ighalo left Al-Shabab, another Saudi Pro League team, abruptly and joined Al Hilal in January 2022, claiming that disagreements over being allowed to represent Nigeria at the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon in January were partly responsible for his decision to leave.
