October 12, (THEWILL) – Ikorodu City FC achieved a milestone on Saturday, winning their first match in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The Lagos-based club defeated Bendel Insurance 3-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
This victory marked a significant turnaround for Ikorodu City, who had struggled in their previous five matches with four losses and a draw. The team’s performance was particularly impressive considering their recent coaching change, following Bright Ozebagbe’s departure after three consecutive defeats.
Despite not having a permanent manager, Ikorodu City dominated the match against Bendel Insurance. Rivio Ayemwenre opened the scoring three minutes into the second half, followed by two goals from Kelechi Onwe in the 55th and 73rd minutes. This result not only gave Ikorodu City their first win but also their second clean sheet of the season.
The victory has lifted Ikorodu City from the bottom of the league table, providing a much-needed boost to their campaign. Meanwhile, other NPFL matches saw Sunshine Stars defeat defending champions Rangers International 1-0 at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Sunday’s fixtures include Enyimba facing Shooting Stars of Ibadan at the Lekan Salami Stadium, while Remo Stars host Nasarawa United. Kwara United will travel to face Abia Warriors in another key match of the weekend.
