May 22, (THEWILL) –Â Despite finishing the season with a 3-0 victory over Sampdoria at San Siro, Inter’s reign as Serie A champions came to an end on Sunday.
To overcome their fierce city rivals to first place, the Nerazzurri needed to beat Sampdoria on the penultimate day and hope Milan lost to Sassuolo.
After Ivan Perisic had opened the scoring early in the second half, Inter completed their part of the bargain with two goals from Joaquin Correa.
But it did not matter because Milan led Sassuolo 3-0 at halftime and held on for the 3-0 victory, ensuring that they – not Inter – were proclaimed Italian champions.
In a sour note for the now former champions, Ivan Perisic was stretchered off the pitch for an injury sustained in the build-up to Inter’s third goal. It was to be the final major action on the day Inter’s reign as Italian champions came to an end.
