April 16, (THEWILL) – Inter Milan returned to the top of Serie A after a 3-1 victory over Spezia in the latest twist in the exciting title battle.
Goals from Marcelo Brozovic, Lautaro Martinez, and Alexis Sanchez, ensured that the Nerazzurri laid down a gauntlet to rivals AC Milan, knocking them off the top of the table.
However, the victory at Stadio Alberto Picco means that Inter remain in a dead heat with the Rossoneri, with a game in hand beyond this round ensuring that the Nerazzurri keep control of their fate.
In a game where chances were scarce at the start, it took over 15 minutes for either side to score, with Denzel Dumfries missing the target. But, there was little preventing Brozovic’s rasping shot into the top-left corner after Danilo D’Ambrosio headed down a looping cross on the edge of the box in the 31st minute.
The visitors were not as clinically composed as they would have liked. Nicolo Barella fumbled a fantastic chance for a second after reaching for the ball past the hour mark, while Dumfries fired a low cross high over the crossbar.
Inter appeared to be safe and sound when Martinez glanced Ivan Perisic’s cross past Ivan Provedel with just over a quarter-hour remaining.
Late on, Giulio Maggiore scored to set up a tense finish, but the visitors restored the two-goal advantage in stoppage time, with Sanchez hammering home a squared Martinez ball.
With their San Siro neighbours facing Genoa later on Good Friday, Simone Inzaghi’s defending champions could very well conclude the weekend in second position.
