March 20, (THEWILL) – Inter’s chances of winning a second consecutive Scudetto suffered yet another setback when Fiorentina held them to a 1-1 draw in Milan.
Their poor streak continued on Saturday as the reigning Serie A winners have now won just two of their last nine league matches.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi had said that recent efforts warranted more, but he may find it difficult to make his case after a match in which Fiorentina lacked cutting edge at first but earned their lead through Lucas Torreira.
Denzel Dumfries quickly equalised, but it was not followed by a winner, leaving Inter with only four points from their last four games at San Siro.
After Napoli’s triumph earlier in the day through Victor Osimhen’s brace, the Nerazzurri knew they needed a win, but they were on the back foot until late in the first half, when Pietro Terracciano had to be quick off his line to block Edin Dzeko.
After Dumfries’ deflected shot allowed the forward a straightforward finish, Terracciano was grateful for an offside flag against Lautaro Martinez, and Fiorentina went ahead early in the second half thanks to an inventive play.
Gaetano Castrovilli fizzed a pass to Nico Gonzalez, who ran by Ivan Perisic and squared for Lucas Torreira to score his second goal in as many games.
Inter trailed for just over five minutes before Perisic sent a cross to the back post, where Dumfries nodded in.
But, the hosts were frustrated once more, when a penalty awarded in Martinez’s favour was overruled after a VAR check. It could have been worse for Inter if not for Samir Handanovic, who had to make a crucial stoppage-time save from Jonathan Ikone to preserve the point for the champions.
