November 15, (THEWILL) – A call has been made to the Nigerian government to make substantial investments in human capital development as a means to stimulate productivity, enhance the economy, and foster improved living conditions and peace among citizens.
This appeal was made by university lecturer and researcher, Desmond Okechukwu Echeta, during his keynote lecture at the 21st National Productivity Day, organised by the National Productivity Centre in Imo State.
The event, themed “National Productivity Movement: An Imperative for Economic Recovery, Sustainable Growth, and Development,” was held on Thursday at the Conference Hall of the Federal Secretariat in Owerri.
Echeta underscored the importance of a robust investment in infrastructure, such as uninterrupted power supply, well-maintained roads, potable water, affordable healthcare, and essential social services.
He argued that government support for entrepreneurial education, agriculture, commerce, industry, research, and innovation would significantly drive Nigeria’s economic growth.
Echeta emphasised that such investments are essential for creating prosperity, employment, and peace.
“Human capital development is essential for driving productivity.
“The Nigerian government must prioritize these areas to create a thriving economy and enhance the quality of life for citizens,” he noted.
NPC State Coordinator Joyce Binitie also addressed the event, urging citizens to engage in productive endeavours to boost the nation’s economy.
She highlighted that productivity extends beyond measuring output and is a catalyst for innovation, efficiency, and quality of life improvement.
She stated, “Productivity empowers us to produce and consume more with the same amount of effort.
“As we navigate current economic challenges, a productive mindset is essential to drive prosperity across all sectors of the Nigerian economy.”
She explained that the mandate of the National Productivity Centre, established under the NPC Act Cap 70 of 2004, is to instil a culture of productivity and operational efficiency across both public and private sectors.
She emphasised the centre’s role in fostering hard work, discipline, patriotism, and dedication.
Chairman of the occasion and Director of the Code of Conduct, Boniface Ejiogu, described National Productivity Day as a significant annual event encouraging Nigerians to shift from a consumption-focused mindset to one of active productivity.
