September 04, (THEWILL) — Legendary fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, has died, according to an announcement from his company.

The Italian-born billionaire, who was 91, died at home surrounded by his family on Thursday.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.

“Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects”, his fashion house said in a statement, adding that a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday.

The best known contemporary designer, Armani, opened his fashion house in Milan in 1975, quickly rising to the top of the industry and going on to dress the stars.

“Giorgio Armani leaves us at 91 years old. With his elegance, sobriety, and creativity, he was able to bring lustre to Italian fashion and inspire the entire world. An icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy. Thank you for everything”, Italy’s President, Giorgia Meloni, wrote in a statement on X.

Founding the company with partner, Sergio Galeotti, Armani helped to popularise looser male suits.

Born into a poor family on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, northern Italy. His parents were Maria Raimondi and Ugo Armani. He had a brother, Sergio, and a sister, Rosanna.

“My mother was the main reason I developed an interest in fashion. She always ensured that my brother, sister and myself were immaculately dressed”, he said in a 2006 interview with UK designer, Stella McCartney.
