The 28-year-old Tunisian, who had a successful 2022, reaching a career-high ranking of number two and reaching the finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open, struggled at the recent Australian Open and lost in the second round.
She will now retire from the upcoming WTA events in Doha and Dubai, stating that the decision was difficult but necessary for her health. Jabeur revealed the news on social media, apologising to fans in the Middle East, who were looking forward to her playing in the tournaments.
Her post read in part: “I will have to retire from Doha and Dubai and this is breaking my heart. I would like to say sorry to all the fans out there in the Middle East that waited for this reunion. I promise I will come back to you stronger and healthy.”
Jabeur’s post-match reaction at the Australian Open was distressing to witnesses, and she was seen visibly upset as she left the court. It was later revealed that she had been dealing with a knee problem and was taking multiple pills to manage the pain. The difficult conditions of the match, which took place at 1:00 am in cold and heavy weather, likely added to her struggles.
