April 25, (THEWILL) – Ons Jabeur has been forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to a calf injury, which deals a big blow to her preparations for the upcoming Roland Garros.
The Tunisian tennis star disclosed the news on social media, stating that medical exams revealed a small tear in her calf and she needs more time to recover. This comes after she had to pull out of her WTA Stuttgart semi-final against Iga Swiatek over the weekend due to the same injury.
Jabeur expressed her disappointment at not being able to defend her Madrid Open title this year, saying, “I am sad to announce that I won’t be able to compete and defend my title this year. I would like to wish everyone and the tournament a great event and look forward to coming back next year.”
The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries this year, having missed both the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships with a health issue that required minor surgery. Jabeur’s only remaining opportunity to prepare for the French Open is the Italian Open, which starts on May 8. She could also opt for a tournament at the WTA 250 level or below.
However, the setback puts her participation in the upcoming Grand Slam in doubt. “I hope to recover soon and come back even stronger,” Jabeur added.
