April 27, (THEWILL) – Jerry Springer, the legendary talk show host of the self-named show, ‘The Jerry Springer Show,’ has died at the age of 79.
The controversial media figure had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months ago but the cancer took a turn for the worse this week.
According to his family, he died peacefully at his Chicago home on Thursday.
A spokesman for the family, Jene Galvin, described him as irreplaceable.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street, who wanted a photo or a word,” Galvin’s statement reads.
“He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humour will live on.”
Before becoming a TV host, Springer was a politician, who served on Cincinnati’s city council in 1971. He became the city’s Mayor in 1977.
He served one term before transitioning into a successful broadcasting career.
Springer hosted the syndicated talk show, ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ for 27 years, where he provided a platform for guests to discuss their personal lives and relationships.
He is survived by Katie Springer, his 47-year-old daughter, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Micki Velton, and his elder sister, Evelyn.
