October 31, (THEWILL) –Â Inter defeated Udinese 2-0 at the San Siro on Sunday afternoon, putting pressure on leading clubs Napoli and Milan at the top of the table.
The Nerazzurri got off to a fast start with Nicolo Barella having two chances to score early on, but he fluffed his lines on both occasions. The Italian midfielder tried his luck once more, but was blocked by Marco Silvestri.
The host pushed for an early goal in the first half, but Udinese’s defence held fairm with Silvestri’s superb goalkeeping, several last-ditch challenges, and the occasional close shave with bad finishing on Inter’s side.
Inter continued to dominate in the second half, and their perseverance was rewarded on the hour mark when Joaquin Correa dribbled through the heart of the Udinese defence and fired a precise strike into Silvestri’s near post.
Correa’s work did not end there, either. The Argentine latched onto a precise cut-back from Denzel Dumfries, steadied himself well inside the box, and smashed a powerful finish into the top corner, effectively ending Udinese’s chances for any point at all.
Even so, Inter could have gotten more. In a deserved triumph for the Nerazzurri, Arturo Vidal hammered barely wide from just outside the penalty area, while Gerard Deulofeu had a goal cancelled for offside.
It ended in disappointment for Luca Gotti, whose team held their hosts at bay for an hour but were unable to score against Simone Inzaghi’s charges. They will now have to collect themselves for the ties ahead.
Udinese will face Sassuolo in Serie A next, while Inter will be focused on Europe, with a game against Sheriff Tiraspor.
