April 24, (THEWILL) – FIFA has received four bids for hosting rights for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, including a joint effort from the United States and Mexico, demonstrating the increasing popularity of women’s football globally.
Brazil and South Africa have also submitted expressions of interest, while the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany have made a joint proposal. The host nation will be announced in May 2024.
FIFA Secretary General, Fatma Samoura, stated: “We are thrilled by the expressions of interest received, not least because they come from member associations with a strong football tradition representing four confederations, thus confirming the consistent popularity of women’s football across the world.”
The United States hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003, winning the former, while Germany hosted the tournament in 2011. The men’s World Cup is already slated to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026. Federations vying to host the Women’s World Cup have until May 19 to express their interest.
The 2023 edition of the tournament will kick off in Australia and New Zealand on July 20, with the hosts facing off against Norway and the Matildas playing against the Republic of Ireland on the first day. The Super Falcons are drawn alongside Australia, Ireland and Canada in Group B.
