BEVERLY HILLS, April 19, (THEWILL) –Â Soon after the news broke that coach Jose Mourinho was meeting with Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy over his continuation as Spurs Manager due to unacceptable performance levels at the club, it has broken that the club pulled the trigger and fired their manager after 17 months on the job.
In a statement released via their official Twitter account, the statement making this public was attached to a brief tweet that read: “The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.”
The Portuguese qualified Spurs to the Carabao Cup final, which is to be played on Sunday, but leaves the club in seventh position in the English Premier League with six games left of the domestic season to play.
Mourinho guided Tottenham to sixth in the preceding 2019/2020 season.
Friday’s 2-2 draw against Everton left Tottenham, who reached the final of the Champions League in 2019 under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino (who is on the verge of another final with new club Paris Saint-Germain of France), unlikely to reach the top four and almost certain to miss Europe’s top football competition completely for another year.
Chairman Levy added a note of appreciation: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.
“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.
“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
Spurs will next play Southampton on Wednesday to improve on their five points off the Champions League places with first-team coaches Ryan Mason and Chris Powel in charge of the squad. It implies the pair will lead the charge against Manchester City in the final of the Carabao Cup.
