December 26, (THEWILL) — This The two sons of Diogo Jota will walk out with mascots at Anfield on Saturday when Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club announced on Friday. The Portuguese striker, who represented both sides during his career, was killed in a car accident with his younger brother in July in northwestern Spain at the age of 28.
Jota arrived at Wolves on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2017 before completing a permanent transfer a year later. The forward moved to Liverpool in 2020 on a five-year contract and lifted the English Premier League trophy this year.
Saturday’s fixture will be the first meeting between Liverpool and Wolves since Jota’s death. His widow Rute Cardoso and their sons, Dinis and Duarte, attended both clubs’ opening home matches in August.
Liverpool permanently withdrew the number 20 shirt from use following the tragedy. The gesture recognised Jota’s contribution to the club during his time on Merseyside.
Both sets of supporters are expected to pay their respects during the weekend encounter. The match offers another opportunity for the football community to remember the striker’s career at two EPL clubs.
